Nick Kaye “Demo Reel 2006”
Editing & Animation
For the first five years after moving to New York City, this studio’s founder worked exclusively in film. This 2:05 reel is the last demo before progressing into more dynamic media — and it’s not a highlights compilation so much as a piece: itself a show of original remixing, mashup film production, and music video editing.
The timecode log:
00:14 PROMOS — the professional bread: promo video editing, NYC
00:41 TITLE SEQUENCES — incl. the era that led to Bristol Boys
01:02 MUSIC VIDEOS — the thread that became dead prez & Rubblebucket
01:28 ADS & INDUSTRIALS — Brooklyn rent isn't paid in vibes
01:47 THE GROCERY STORE — see below
02:05 OUT.
About that frame up top: a woman peers over her aviators, mid-reach across a bin of oranges, caught somewhere between suspicion and flirtation. It’s the reel’s thesis in one image — the ordinary world, color pushed to saturation, re-cut until it confesses to being cinema.
The manifesto says courage is creative muscle, practiced and strengthened through craft. A demo reel is that practice made public: two minutes of here is exactly what I can do, with nowhere to hide. This one is old enough to vote now, and it still is what it says it is.
