Illuminum
Fragrance Brand & Packaging
Some commissions come through an agency. This one came through a bar in Los Angeles, circa 2004, when the studio’s founder was freshly dropped out of film school and the man buying the drinks was a once-famous high-fashion hair stylist with a fragrance brand in his head and a genius for persuading people.
A few weeks later: an apartment in Manhattan, a four-day design bender, and this — an entire brand and packaging system for Illuminum. The client held court the whole time like deposed royalty, dispensing unprintable war stories from the top of the fashion world while various parties took turns outside the building, loudly requesting payment for things. In retrospect, that last detail was what a lawyer would call notice.
The design
The system is a study in letting the product be the color:
Bottles: frosted glass squares and slims under brushed-steel caps — laboratory forms, jewelry finish.
Cartons: matte black, name and variant only. The shelf reads as a single black monolith until you pick one up.
Color: none added. The juice itself — white, green, amber, red — is the entire palette, glowing through the frost like the name promised.
Discovery set: eight miniatures in a black slide-drawer — the line in one gesture.
The invoice
He never paid a cent. The check bounced a few days after the founder left the apartment, which at least made the engagement’s terms retroactively clear: zero dollars, four days, all rights to a story this good.
And here’s the thing — the work was real. Illuminum went on to become a genuinely successful London fragrance house: a Mayfair boutique, press in the niche-perfume world, and the kind of endorsement money cannot buy when White Gardenia Petals was widely reported as the scent worn by Kate Middleton at the 2011 royal wedding. The four-day brand outlived the bounced check by two decades and counting.
The manifesto is unsentimental about this kind of thing: acceptance is not passivity, and everything is temporary — including grudges. The studio keeps this page the way other shops keep a framed first dollar: proof the craft was never the part that failed. Consider this page the invoice.
Brand systems are commissioned today through Branded Play — payment due on terms agreed in advance, a policy with an origin story.
